Ballroom Dance Pratice Wear
Much like martial arts, tennis, and other sports ballroom dancing also has specialized clothing that is designed specifically for ballroom dancing. Do you have to have practice wear to ballroom dance? No, but it doesn’t hurt and I have always preferred to dance in dancewear whenever possible.
What is Ballroom Practice Wear?
Ballroom practice wear is an article of clothing made for practicing ballroom dancing. It is generally made of a 95% Poly 5% Spandex material, or stretch gabardine that way it is stretchable and flexible enough to move with your body while in motion. Ballroom Dance Practice wear is available for both men and women in a variety of options.
Latin/Rhythm Ballroom Practice Wear
Latin/Rhythm dances include ChaCha, Rumba, Swing, Samba, and others. These dances use Cuban motion and the outfits for ladies generally feature shorter skirts and details to help accentuate your hip movement and keep your feet and ankles free from getting tangled up in your legs with the quick movements. Flared skirts and fringe are often seen in these categories.
Ladies have the option of a one-piece dress or a mix and match type of a top and skirt you can see here at discount dance.
Ballroom/Smooth Practice Wear for Ladies
The dances for ballroom/smooth are Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, and Quickstep or Peabody. In these dances, you’re going to be looking for a long skirt that is going to flow and swirl around your legs. Try to keep the length around ankle length especially if you’re newer.
When you add rise and fall into your dancing the skirt is also going to lower with you and keeping your skirt at ankle length means you are less likely to step on it while dancing. This will keep you from falling or putting a hole through your dress with the heel of your shoe. (both of these things have happened to me before!) Here again, you have the option of a one or two-piece when considering ballroom practice wear for ladies. You can see affordable options here at discount dance
Now ladies, let’s not forget about the pants. That’s right, there are plenty of options for ladies in the pants practice wear department. While I would not compete in them, they have some really cute ones with fringe that I would totally perform in!
Ballroom Practice Wear Mens
The type of shirt worn above is perfectly suitable for men’s ballroom practice wear, most men don’t practice in a rhythm competition shirt. That doesn’t mean that you can’t and I always recommend practicing in your competition wear a few times to get used to how everything moves. You can get the shirt here at discount dance
Men usually can get a pair of boot cut jazz pants for ballroom dance practice wear if they are looking to be frugal. If you plan on competing or performing in them then I would suggest spending the money on a pair of ballroom dance pants. Since these can be worn for smooth or rhythm, one pair will suffice in the beginning.
So that pretty much sums up ballroom practice wear. One of my favorite things about practice wear is its versatility, it can be worn for practice, you can dress it up to wear out for an evening of dancing, or you can even compete in it!
